REST vs. GraphQL vs. tRPC: Choosing the Right API Paradigm for Modern Web Applications
Architectural comparison of API protocols. Performance trade-offs, caching ergonomics, type safety, and real-world scalability considerations.

1. The Evolution of Client-Server Communication
For over two decades, REST over HTTP has been the backbone of web communication. Its reliance on standard HTTP verbs (GET, POST, PUT, DELETE) and uniform resource identifiers makes it straightforward to scale and cache at CDN edge layers.
However, modern applications frequently face challenges with over-fetching and under-fetching when building complex, relational user interfaces.
2. Architectural Trade-Off Matrix
• REST: Excels at public third-party APIs, microservice boundaries, and aggressive edge HTTP caching. Drawback: requires multiple roundtrips for nested relations.
• GraphQL: Excels in complex multi-client ecosystems (web, iOS, Android) where clients require precise data shapes in a single query. Drawback: complex caching, query complexity attacks, and heavy client bundle size.
• tRPC: Excels in full-stack TypeScript monoliths (Next.js, Node.js). Provides compile-time end-to-end type safety with zero code generation and minimal boilerplate. Drawback: couples frontend and backend tightly to TypeScript.
3. When to Choose Which Architecture
If you are building an internal SaaS application with Next.js or React, tRPC or Server Actions provide the fastest development velocity and strongest type guarantees. If you are serving external developer ecosystems, standard REST remains the universal choice.
